Every October, throughout the city of Manchester, some of the city’s best young players from the four recreational leagues get together to compete in the “Andy Wilson Tournament”. While few of these players are hardly aware of the history of Andy, their parents and grandparents certainly do. Andy Wilson is considered by many to be the father of New Hampshire soccer. Due to his tireless efforts, the sport exploded in popularity to the point where schools are annually producing male and female players capable of competing on the top collegiate levels. Andy Wilson first learned the rudiments of the game on his grammar school playing fields in Glasgow Scotland. After moving to the Queen City, he competed with three soccer clubs and he later coached Manchester United, a semi pro team made up primarily of former college soccer players. A 1933 graduate of Manchester Central High School, Andy brought with him a burning passion for the sport of soccer. His devotion to the game and his promotional efforts were recognized by the NHIAA, where Wilson served on the soccer committee for 25 years. He was also awarded the prestigious, Carl Lundholm Award, given annually by the Manchester Union Leader to an individual or organization in recognition of contributions to youth athletics.
